1. A case - these are varied in design but you will need a case which accomodates the parts you require for your computer.
2. Power Supply - may come with the case or may need to buy seperately.
3. Motherboard - Choice of AMD, Pentium or maybe a VIA board depending on your requirements. Motherboards come with added extras which may include USB, Video onboard, Sound onboard, network onboard.
4. Processor - once again AMD, Pentium or VIA to go with your chosen motherboard. You may or may not need to buy a processor fan depending on whether you bought a retail or OEM package. Dual and Quad core processors are the favourites at the moment.
5. Memory - Ideally you require 1Gb for an XP system or 2Gb for a Windows Vista system although this is a minimum. You may require more depending on your use of the computer.
6. Optical Drive - A DVD Writer is the standard.
7. Hard Drive - Bigger the better, choice is by size, speed and connection. We now have IDE and SATA as a choice, SATA being the newest and fastest flavour. A minimum of 160Gb should be considered.
8. Video Card - Choice depends on what you intend to use the computer for. A fast video card is required for games or digital photography but an onboard video card is fine for the business environment.
9. Networking - you can network you computers by wired or wireless means. Wired is cheaper but means wires between each computer. Wireless is a little more expensive but not too unreasonable and no wires !! Networked computers can share internet connection, printers, scanners, hard drives and optical drives. Can be a means to save on peripherals.
10. Internet - Choices include dial-up, ISDN, ADSL, cable or even satellite.
11. Floppy Drive - not as popular as it use to be. Can sometimes replace this item with a memory card reader which would be more useful. Also can use USB pen drives to transfer info between usb enabled computers.
12. Monitor - CRT or TFT or even LCD or maybe you fancy a plasma screen ? Choice is mostly down to budget, ideally a 17" TFT or CRT is adequate for most situations.
13. Sound Card - onboard sound cards are adequate for most situations but you can invest in dolby surround sound if you need to.
14. Peripherals - Choice is endless, Mouse ideally should be optical, keyboard is best wired but can be cordless, speakers are also a personal choice can have 2 or more speakers depending on choice of sound card.
15. Printer - All in one printer/scanner/copier is usually a good choice but ink cartridges can be expensive. Laser printer is excellent for a more expensive initial expense but cheaper prints.
16. Scanner - USB scanners can be found that just plug into the USB port and need no other power source. Ideal for the odd scan then can put the scanner away until needed again if space is at an optimum.
There are numerous other items you can add to a computer such as TV card, video editing hardware, firewire etc etc. All are useful but come down to personal choice and are not always required when building a 'basic' computers.
